Shopify Payments on the Basic plan is modelled at 2% + £0.25 per sale. That looks cheap next to marketplaces — until you add the ads that bring the visitor. Monthly Shopify subscription is not included; add it mentally (or in extra cost) if volume is low.
Worked example with 20% ads
A £45 sale with 2% + 25p card fees can look excellent at 0% ads. At 20% ads the take-home collapses toward marketplace levels. Always model the traffic cost you actually pay.
When Shopify beats eBay or Etsy

How to use every field
These fields are the same idea on every platform calculator — only the fee stack behind the scenes changes.
- Selling price — what the buyer pays for the item (before postage).
- Product cost — what you paid for the item, including packaging materials if you want them in the number.
- Shipping charged — postage the buyer pays you. Marketplace fees often apply to item + postage.
- Your shipping cost — the label you actually buy. Charging £3.99 and spending £4.40 is a fee you invent for yourself.
- Ads % — promoted listings, boosts, Meta ads or TikTok spend as a share of the sale. Leave 0 if you never promote.
- Return rate — expected % of sales that come back. Fashion often needs 8–15%; electronics less.
- VAT on platform fees — turn on if you cannot reclaim VAT on marketplace fees (typical for many private / non-VAT sellers).
